About Us |
Our Mission
An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Racine Habitat for Humanity, Inc., tries to eliminate poverty housing and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
Who We Are
Racine Habitat for Humanity, Inc., is a not-for-profit corporation of volunteers who work with low-income families enabling them to become homeowners. Volunteers are individuals from local churches, civic clubs, businesses, and community organizations who work together to renovate existing houses or build new houses. These houses are then sold to the new owners at no profit and no interest.
How We Advertise
We serve a population with very low income, usually less than 50% of the Racine County median. These people are reached by advertising in the newspaper and in churches, by placing signs at all of our work sites, and by word of mouth. We also get publicity through local newspaper and television coverage. Habitat for Humanity International also helps local affiliates like Racine Habitat.
How We Collaborate
Habitat collaborates with the City of Racine, the County of Racine, and the Housing Authority of Racine. We have received some houses to be rehabbed as well as some lots from these organizations. Most houses are located in low-income, high-minority areas of Racine.
Our Staff
Our paid staff consists of one half-time construction leader, one quarter-time construction leader, a half-time executive director, and four part-time office staff (about ten hours per week each). Our executive director, Nora Grosse, has been a leader of Racine Habitat since it began in 1988. Our staff is committed to the program because they see the wonderful results when a family moves into a home.
