How Habitat Works

Using the volunteer skills of all God's people, we rehabilitate existing houses and build new houses for low-income families in need of decent, affordable housing. Because Habitat homeowners are not eligible for conventional financing, they put in 300 hours of "sweat equity". The homes are then sold to them at no profit and no interest, and Habitat homeowners make low monthly payments to build equity in their homes.

Working Out The Finances

The cost of a typical Habitat home averages $95,000 with mortgages issued over a fixed time period. The value of an average Racine Habitat home is around $130,000. The difference between the cost and the value is taken care of by issuing a second forgivable mortgage for the difference.

Financial support from local businesses, individuals, corporations, churches, private foundations, and civic organizations make the Habitat housing ministry possible. All contributions are tax deductible.

Better Community

By involving people of different cultural backgrounds, Racine Habitat is building new human relationships and a stronger, more compassionate community.
